A temperature-compensated crystal oscillator is a device that uses a temperature compensation circuit to reduce the frequency deviation of the crystal oscillator with temperature changes. It has the following characteristics:

  • It does not require a constant temperature bath, so it is small in size, light in weight, consumes little power, and can work when it is turned on.
  • Its frequency stability can reach 5×10-6 to 5×10-3 within a certain temperature range, and it is suitable for use as a standard frequency source for various small radio stations and field testing instruments.

Its compensation methods can be divided into two categories: direct compensation and indirect compensation.

  1. Direct compensation is to add a temperature-sensitive compensation resistor-capacitor network to the crystal oscillator circuit.
  2. Indirect compensation is to add a temperature compensation resistor network to the front end of the voltage-controlled crystal oscillator, and use its output voltage to control the control end of the voltage-controlled crystal oscillator.
